A goal for Bills starters against Bucs: score a TD (12:32 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Bills running back C.J. Spiller attempted to inject some levity into EJ Manuel's post-practice news conference by asking the quarterback a question. A smiling Spiller wondered earlier this week what the offense's focus would be for Saturday's exhibition game when the Bills (1-2) host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2). ''We haven't scored a touchdown there yet.'' The second-year quarterback understands what's at stake for this team, which opens at Chicago on Sept. 7. Many starters are expected to sit out Buffalo's preseason finale against Detroit on Thursday.

Byrd, the top free agent acquisition by New Orleans this past offseason, was cleared for contact this week, allowing him to practice at full speed and with no limitations for the first time since signing a six-year, $56 million contract in March. NFL roundup: Browns pick Hoyer over Manziel (7:01 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Brian Hoyer was named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh. First-year head coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday he needed more time to evaluate the competition between Hoyer, who started both of the Browns' preseason games, and rookie first-round pick Johnny Manziel. While Hoyer has only four career starts -- and went 3-0 with the Browns before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2013 -- his biggest advantages were experience and leadership. Manziel, drafted 22nd overall in May, played only two seasons at Texas A&M in an offense designed to win at that level.

Bills center rages at rookie after training camp fight (4:05 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Fans aren't the only ones itching for the NFL season to get started. NFL players are starting to buck up, and it's high time to get them pointed at opposing teams. Otherwise, you have what happened Wednesday at Bills practice. Bills center Eric Wood and undrafted rookie DE Bryan Johnson came to blows during a goal-line drill on Wednesday morning. And this was no ordinary melee; this one included pretty much the entire team, and ended with Wood threatening to kill a rookie. All in a day's work. Here's the account of the incident from the Buffalo News : Running back Fred Jackson had slithered into the end zone. The play was over, but the battle was not. Before the fight could be broken up, tight end Scott Chandler had taken Johnson to the ground. Chandler's helmet also was torn off. An incensed Wood marched toward Johnson and yelled, "I'll f------ kill you!" Video of the fight , taken from a monitor, is below: Here's another angle, with some NSFW language, of Johnson (no. 67) stalking away from the fray: Bills defensive end Jerry Evans was heard gloating about how three weeks in pads does strange things to a man. Bills head coach Doug Marrone was not as thrilled: "It's not part of the game," he said. "Therefore, I don't want to speak about it. It hurts the integrity of our game the more we talk about it. That's how I feel about fighting." Yeah, time to get the games rolling. ____ Jay Busbee is a writer for Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Hoyer wins Browns' quarterback job over Johnny Manziel (3:21 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: (Reuters) - Journeyman Brian Hoyer got the nod over charismatic rookie Johnny Manziel on Wednesday when the Cleveland Browns named their starting quarterback. The two had been vying for the job for most of the off-season before Browns coach Mike Pettine and his staff opted for Hoyer, mainly because of his previous experience in the National Football League (NFL) and his leadership qualities. "He was the clear leader from the beginning," Pettine, who consulted with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains before reaching a decision, said in a statement.

Yahoo! Sports: The sale of the Buffalo Bills is entering its final stage with prospective buyers asked to submit their formal bids in about two weeks, a person familiar with the sale process told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The timetable was pushed back about a week because Morgan Stanley, the banking firm overseeing the sale on behalf of late owner Ralph Wilson's estate, extended a deadline last month in an attempt to increase the number of prospective bidders. A new owner is still expected to be identified by October, but it's not certain whether it will be in time to be approved by NFL owners at league meetings in early October. Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula are considered the front-runners among a small group of candidates who have already met with members of Wilson's estate over the past two weeks.

Bucs eager to game plan for Bills (8:02 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Undeterred by a pair of preseason loses to begin his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coach Lovie Smith saw progress in Saturday's loss to the Miami Dolphins and views the upcoming third game at the Buffalo Bills this Saturday as the most important time of the preseason. For the first time, Smith's coaching staff will game plan for the Bills and attempt to mimic what a routine week during the regular season will be like. "It's critical to do that, once the regular season comes you want guys to know what they're doing every second and just a routine instead of wondering what this is like," Smith said. "That's always good for the players to see when we lift, when you have to get your lifts in through the week, it's a little bit different training and working out in the offseason as opposed to the regular season.

AP source: Bills WR Watkins day to day (7:30 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is day to day after tests confirmed a diagnosis of bruised ribs, a person close to the situation told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not provided an update on the first-round draft pick since Watkins was hurt in a 19-16 preseason loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Coach Doug Marrone declined to provide a timetable and would only say Watkins would not practice on Monday, when the team returned to its training-camp facility in suburban Rochester. The receiver left the field holding his left side where he was kneed by leaping linebacker Ryan Shazier during a pass play.

Marrone vague on Watkins' injury (7:29 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone declined Monday to confirm the exact nature of wide receiver Sammy Watkins' rib injury or how long the rookie is expected to be sidelined. Watkins left Saturday's exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Steelers early on and did not return. Watkins was injured on a hit by Steelers rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier, and reportedly has bruised ribs. They really are," Marrone said.
